Alassio is nestled in the “Bay of the Sun.” It is a renowned seaside resort and tourist destination thanks to a fine sandy shoreline over 3 km long. Then there are pure waters (beautiful seabed and variety of marine “inhabitants”) and a climate that always ensures a good temperature. Opposite is Gallinara Island, where the herring gull nests. The marina has 450 berths.
Alassio’s name is also linked to the “Muretto” invented by Mario Berrino, patron of Caffè Roma, and writer Ernest Hemingway. Back to the 1950s: Berrino wanted to beautify the wall of the public gardens. He thought of ceramic tiles autographed by famous people: the first were Hemingway, the Cetra Quartet, and Cosimo Di Ceglie (some 740 were added). In addition, the statue of lovers (according to summer custom). The “Miss Muretto” contest is held here. The historic center runs alongside the beach with fishermen’s houses and Via XX Settembre, which tourists know as “budello,” but which remains a typical Ligurian “caruggiu” among stores and prestigious stores. Then there are Alassio’s countless hotels and historic buildings: Palazzo Ferrero de Gubernatis (‘700), Palazzo Scofferi (another branch) on Via Veneto, and, turning onto Via Milite Ignoto, Palazzi Vallega, Brea (Via Dante) and Montanaro (Piazza Della Valle). Next to the sea runs the Fatty Promenade dotted with pine trees: not to be missed is the view from Bestoso Wharf. Alassio has typical products to enjoy: from fish cured meats (bottarga, mosciame, ventresca) to desserts (baci). And don’t forget a good glass of wine (from the Albenga plain), perhaps a Pigato.
